Over 1,400 HUD-Assisted Multifamily Apartments in California Eligible for $185 million in Weatherization Assistance Program Funds

On March 2, 2010, the Department of Energy (DOE) issued a final rule that identifies 49,000 HUD-assisted multifamily apartments and 41,000 public housing apartments in California as meeting the program's income requirements without need for further evaluation. This important ruling makes them eligible to receive up to $6,500 per unit in federal Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) funds, of which California has been awarded up to $185 million as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. In 2011, a few hundred additional properties were added to the list.

Preservation is Green

Preserving affordable homes is greener than building new. While many organizations focus on the benefits of building new "green" housing with eye‐catching energy saving features and special woods and other finishes with low carbon footprints, they often miss the point that there is nothing greener than preserving and rehabilitating existing housing. Preserving and safeguarding existing affordable homes is the cornerstone to creating livable communities and is the focus of CHPC’s Affordable Housing Preservation Program.
